What is Tongdang?

"Tong" is the Thai word for gold.
"Dang" is the color red.

When used together, Tongdang is used to describe the metal commonly known as copper. We chose to use it for its symbolic represenation of the vibrant flavor and color of Thai food. It also represents good fortune, for copper was used to create the first coins used for money.

Our dining room boasts bold red accents with hints of copper and gold. There are several antique pieces that add to the Asian mystique of Tongdang.

About our artwork

» The Fu Dogs

We proudly display a set of Chinese lion statues (Fu Dogs) that date back to the 1800's. Fu dogs were mythical beasts and often placed at temple gates to protect humans from harm.

» Paintings

There are several paintings that adorn our wall that were created specifically for Tongdang by Kamol Tassananchalee. Khun Kamol's work is world renowned, and he has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the King of Thailand. He his held in high regard as the National Painter of Thailand or as some call him, Thailand's Picasso.

» The Chinese Horse

We have a large wooden horse sculpture from China. The horse is a favorite theme for many Chinese artists because it represents strength, courage and the fast speed of life. Horses are also known an imperial symbol and are known to be free spirits.

» Modern Thai sculpture

A large Thai sculpture is displayed in the center of the restaurant that is enclosed in an acrylic case. Created by Kamol Tassananchalee, it is based loosely upon old Thai shadow puppets. The textures and rich colors are very pleasing to the eye. We invite you to come in and browse the piece for yourself.

» Thai gold leaf lacquer paneling

Thai laquerware is most prevalent in the Northern regions of Thailand. High quality laquerware is comprised of at least seven coats of lacquer, allowed to dry one week between coats. This piece depicts a scene of traditional Thai temple life. There are numerous monks shown praying and images of people making offerings to bhudda.

» Various wooden benches and tables

We have a collection of wooden benches in the waiting area that are from China. The wood is very old and deteriorated from use. But the texture is smooth and pleasant. Place a takeout order and come by to check them out!
